A Secret Unveiled

This was possibly something between the 7th and 10th time I went to that Andhra Hotel for lunch. It was the favorite place of my friend. The meals comprised of rice and curries and chutnies and so many things I never wanted to taste. I just saved life by eating 2-3 major items in it. I don’t know how they decided the timings, but something called Sambar always came after we finish 75% of the meal. If it didn’t come, the other guy asked for it after the 75% of lunch time elapsed.

I didn’t show interest in Sambar as there were other things to fill the stomach. And I knew it would be a liquidy liquidy stuff not worth eating. I mean it’s worth drinking only. The Sambar came in small bucket. And what I saw the guy getting out of the bucket was some colored water. I tasted it earlier; many times while in Bangalore. And the liquid didn’t seem that intriguing for a re-taste.

Time passed by until the day I decided to try it out. I tried moving the spoon inside the Sambar-filled bucket in the hope that something else might be there. Other than what I see everyday. May be nobody ever wanted to uncover the secret in front of me. It’s high time to find out the truth.

The spoon in my hand was revolving, and revolving in the Sambar bucket until it hit something hard. Bucket was on the table and much above the eye-level. It was impossible to look inside without standing up, which I didn’t do. I decided to bring the hard-thing up with the spoon. But what if it comes out to be a murdered lizard? Or a monkey head? Or cow-eyes? Or … These were the things discovered in the soup served in the movie “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”. There was an item called ‘Snake Surprise’ made of live snakes. And post-dinner dessert was ‘Chilled Monkey-Brain’ in the movie. Top of monkey-heads were cut nicely and ice-cream spoons were provided in it. I never tasted though.

Back in Bangalore, India, we had grown suspicious of the thing called Sambar. A few local hotels piled varieties of vagetables in the store but sold only rice and Sambar. While it was quite unlikely that the vegetables were dispersed inside the white-rice, we suspected something fishy in the Sambar. It looked like colored water with some sort of powder immeresed, with no remains of the vegetables, or monkey-heads or anything. And surprisingly, that hotel regulars were in sound health. An underground team was formed to investigate the whereabouts of the vegetables and also the preparation of Sambar. I can’t disclose the investigation report as it’s still underway and the information we received so far is quite confidential and sensitive.

The spoon had stopped revolving in my hand. It was time to uncover the truth. And finally I picked up all caurage to lift the thing up out of the bucket. It was a freshly cooked piece of drumstick!

Finding a drumstick in the food was to be kept highly confidential during my days in Bangalore. The infomation demanded to be kept classified. There were drumstick-kidnappers all around, who would try to divert your attention. Once you look away, even for a split-second, the piece of drumstick is hijacked! There would be nothing you could do for it, apart from sobbing looking at dead remnants of the same. A better solution to curb this crime was to put the drumstick in your mouth and even eat half of the stuff inside. Then declare that this drumstick has already had it’s way into your mouth and not worth stealing. Still it failed to prevent the crime occassionally.

Next time you see something like the following in your sambar, call the drumstick-helpline immediately to take control of the situation and protect the endangered pieces.

Now that I found the drumstick in the bucket, there was no time to waste. The whole bucket was examined thoroughly for any further trace of family members of the lone drumstick. None was found!

Finally we concluded all the drumstick had already been fished-out by the drumstick-mafia.
We asked for another bucket of Sambar, and a full community of drumsticks was discovered inside. Now it’s time to be careful of the drumstick-mafia next time, every time.
